Art has always had a special place in history museums, from displays of historic fashions and paintings to modern reinterpretation through murals and installations. This month, explore a variety of artwork, old and new, at the Lexington History Museums! New events are being added daily, including for Spooky Season, so be sure to check out our website at www.lexingtonhistory.org.

 

Recounting the Revolution: The History and Meaning of Leutze’s News of Lexington
Sunday, September 14, 5:00 – 7:00 PM, at the Depot
$10 members, $15 nonmembers
A newly restored painting in the Depot museum offers a Victorian perspective on the trauma of April 19th, from the artist who brought us Washington Crossing the Delaware. Join art historian Kate Criscitiello to hear its story and the ways later generations viewed the Revolution.

The Old Burying Ground is a showcase of over 300 years of mortuary art, from skulls and crossbones to weeping willow trees. Discover how our ancestors grappled with and brought beauty to death.

Depot Mural Ribbon Cutting

Local artist Kit Collins has been hard at work all summer beautifying the columns behind the Depot into a colorful mural of Lexington’s history past and present. Join LHM and the town for a ribbon cutting and special discussion with the artist to discover the stories represented in the art!

Swept Up In Revolution Curator’s Talk
Thursday, September 18, 1:00 – 2:00 PM, at Buckman Tavern

Our latest exhibit follows the lives of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. How did a war for independence break out in a sleepy country town, and what were the consequences for the survivors once the smoke cleared? Join curator Jesse Hilton for a special conversational tour.

In The Footsteps of the American Revolution Artist Lecture
Thursday, September 25, 7:00 – 8:30 PM, at Munroe Tavern

Steven Edson’s photography of local Revolutionary battlefields and landmarks urges the public to reconsider the spaces they drive by and inhabit every day. Join the artist for a discussion of this project, our relationship with the historical landscape around us, and further images from this collection.

The Fog of War: A Buckman Tavern Murder Mystery
Saturday, October 18, 7:00 – 9:00 PM, at Buckman Tavern

Revolution is in the air…and so is murder! This special Tavern Night asks you to help solve a mysterious death at Buckman Tavern. Who done it, and why? Guests will enjoy an evening of food and drink while collecting clues. Join the investigation and catch the culprit — before they strike again!
