About Us

Connecting Lexingtonians with the community for twenty-six years!

Twenty-six years ago, Lexington native Jim Shaw and his wife Laurie Atwater, made a decision that would change their lives. Becoming small business owners was not in the plan earlier in their lives, but as they became more involved in the community and started a family, they decided to make a leap of faith. Marrying their skills–Jim was a public relations professional and spokesman in the public sector and Laurie was a marketing and advertising professional–they launched what was first called the Lexington Citizen in 1995.

With the support of family, friends, and a very dedicated group of local advertisers,  it has grown into what is now Lexington’s Colonial Times Magazine.

Lexington’s Colonial Times Magazine is a full-color, community-based feature publication providing in-depth articles about Lexington and the issues that are important to the people who live and work here. We celebrate the spirit of community and the unique history that is only found in Lexington.

Our goal is to provide the community with human interest stories and features on a diverse range of topics.  We also want to provide a vehicle for essential community-based organizations and small businesses to connect with the community in a profound way.

We are delighted to be a forum where Lexingtonians can learn more about the community they call home.

We are equally pleased that we have developed a vehicle that provides an effective and affordable means for local businesses to advertise their goods and services.

We cover local issues with context and perspective that we know Lexington readers value. We regularly feature articles about the rich history of our unique area so that as a community we can appreciate our heritage. Whether it’s the important work of the Lexington Education Foundation or the exciting and educational activities of the Lexington Historical Society or supporting the arts at the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, the Colonial Times Magazine is dedicated to keeping the community informed about the important work of these and other organizations.

We also publish regular features like Parenting Matters, Senior Matters, and All Things Sustainable.

Each month the Colonial Times Magazine is mailed free of charge to thousands of residents and businesses in and around Lexington. Everyone in Lexington gets it in their mailbox.

We’ve been serving community organizations and local businesses for sixteen years; we are proud of our deep roots in Lexington and we are grateful to our loyal advertisers and readers.
