T he Town of Lexington announced today that two of its affordable housing
initiatives have received significant funding from the Commonwealth, reflecting the strength of local
partnerships in expanding housing options for residents.
Governor Maura Healey’s administration awarded Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) to Causeway Development for its Lowell Street affordable housing project, which will be the first Passive
House, all-electric, solar-powered, 100% affordable housing in the state, providing deeply affordable
housing while also lowering energy bills for residents.
In a separate award, the Commonwealth granted a funding request from the Lexington Housing
Assistance Board (LexHAB), through the Affordable Homes Act, to support construction of affordable
accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on several LexHAB properties. The Lexington Affordable Housing
Trust contributed a $1 million local match toward the project.
“Landing two major state awards in the same round is a real vote of confidence in Lexington’s
approach to affordable housing,” said Town Manager Steve Bartha. “Getting LIHTC funding on the
first try is uncommon, and pairing state ADU funding with a meaningful local match shows exactly the
kind of partnership that will keep expanding housing opportunities across town.”
The Lowell Street and LexHAB ADU projects represent two different but complementary approaches
to affordable housing production – one a larger multi-unit development, the other a distributed model
built into existing neighborhoods – both advancing the Town’s affordable housing and sustainability goals.
