Kunal Botla is excited to announce his candidacy for Lexington’s Planning Board in the March 2, 2026 town election. Kunal is running to bring his architectural, transportation, and urban planning knowledge into Lexington’s zoning.
As a student in architecture, planning, and policy, and a regular attendee at Planning Board meetings, he understands the importance and impact of zoning policy. Kunal’s architectural and transportation background will ensure that proposals in front of the Planning Board are well constructed.
As a Lexington resident for more than 10 years, Kunal has demonstrated a meaningful commitment to public service. He currently serves as Chair of the Transportation Advisory Committee, where he has advanced practical, resident-focused solutions. Improvements include the $20 annual “Limitless Lexpress” bus pass and substantially increased availability and frequency of MBTA bus service.
Under his leadership, transportation spearheaded initiatives to reduce the traffic impact of multi-family projects including agreements to install bus shelters, fund a shared Alewife shuttle, and contribute to the town’s transportation fund.
As a Town Meeting Member for Precinct 4, Kunal knows that Lexington’s unique, historical character requires a thoughtful approach to balance new development with preservation. This approach requires more tailored regulation than simple state defaults, and should be unique to Lexington’s specific needs.
Kunal’s priorities include:
- Advocating for simple, clear language and visuals that ensure transparency and clear communication with the community.
- Prioritizing the protection of existing homes, utilizing form-based regulation that encourages smaller, more affordable homes and expands housing options for all stages and walks of life.
- Creating a plan for Lexington’s future that minimizes residential tax increases by bringing businesses into town while protecting our environment. This plan will include modernizing the Hartwell district and revitalizing the Center to strengthen Lexington’s commercial tax base.
Kunal is a strong supporter of sustainable development and expanding Lexington’s Urban Tree Canopy. He will work with the Tree Committee and established experts in the field to mitigate the environmental effects of new developments in Lexington.
Kunal brings a track record of achieving results and contemporary education, with an understanding of how Lexington’s zoning decisions will result in change. He will help the Planning Board develop a long-term plan for Lexington that considers all of our issues and communities.
