Back-to-School Prep: Tips to Help Parents Set Kids Up for Success

As summer break ends, many families are preparing for the return to school routines. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading into high school, a smooth back-to-school transition can set the tone for a successful year. Here are some helpful tips for parents to get started:
Start Routines Early
A week or two before school begins, start easing back into school-year routines. Gradually move bedtime and wake-up times earlier so the first day doesn’t come as a shock. Practice the morning routine, including getting dressed, eating breakfast, and heading out the door on time.
Shop Smart for Supplies
Review the school’s supply list and involve your child in the shopping process. Letting them pick a backpack or a few fun items helps build excitement and a sense of independence. Don’t forget to label everything, especially items like lunch boxes, jackets, and water bottles.
Create a Homework-Friendly Space
Set up a designated space at home for homework and reading. It should be quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions like phones and TV. Keep basic supplies handy, such as pencils, paper, and a calendar to track assignments.
Check in Emotionally
Back-to-school can bring out a range of emotions—nerves, excitement, and even anxiety. Have open conversations with your child about how they’re feeling and what to expect. Validate their feelings and reassure them that it’s okay to be a little nervous, especially if they’re starting a new school or grade.
Get Organized Together
Talk about what to expect during the school day, start and end times, bus or drop-off details, and any after-school activities. Post a family calendar somewhere visible to keep track of key dates, events, and appointments.
Establish Screen Time Limits
As school approaches, start setting boundaries around screen…especially in the evenings. Encourage more reading, outdoor time, and family activities to help shift away from summer habits.
Celebrate the Transition
Make the start of the school year feel special. Whether it’s a favorite breakfast on the first day or a handwritten note in their lunchbox, small gestures can make a big impact and help kids feel supported.
With a little planning and encouragement, back-to-school can be an exciting time for growth and new opportunities. Every child is different, so focus on what works best for your family, and remember, you’ve got this!
