June 16, 2026 Special Election Results: Town Meeting Decision Stands Due to Vote Threshold
On June 16, 2026, the Town of Lexington held a Special Election in accordance with
Section 8 of Chapter 215 of the Acts of 1929 “An Act to Establish in the Town of Lexington
Representative Town Government by Limited Town Meetings.”
This referendum asked voters whether to uphold or overturn the decision of the 2026 Annual Town
Meeting to amend Chapter 90-9 of the Code of the Town of Lexington, authorizing the Select Board to
impose reasonable fees related to the disposal of waste.
• A “Yes” vote upheld the action taken by Town Meeting.
• A “No” vote sought to overturn the action taken by Town Meeting.
Under the provisions governing the referendum:
1. The number of “No” votes must exceed the number of “Yes” votes; and
2. At least 20 percent of all registered voters must cast a “No” vote for the Town Meeting action
to be overturned.
Official, Certified Election Results:
• Total Registered Voters: 23,574
• 20% “No” Vote Threshold to Overturn: 4,715
• YES Votes: 2,977
• NO Votes: 4,374
Because the number of ‘No’ votes did not meet the 20 percent requirement, the action taken by the
2026 Annual Town Meeting is upheld, and the amendment to Chapter 90‑9 of the Code of the Town of
Lexington stands. The amendment will now be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office for
approval.
