Lighting the Way (a hands-on program for grades 3-5)
Tuesday, February 20, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, at Buckman Tavern
$15 members, $20 nonmembers (pre-registration required)
In the past, labor and daily routines were planned around when the sun rose and set. So how did people see at night before electric light? Explore a historic tavern to find out! We’ll uncover how we learn about the past from the writing and objects people left behind and learn how to make a working candle from beeswax and a lantern from tin. Kids will learn how people of the past used tools to make the world around them easier to navigate.
Science and Medicine (a hands-on program for grades 6-8)
Thursday, February 22, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, at Buckman Tavern
$15 members, $20 nonmembers (pre-registration required)
People of the past used science just like we do every day, even on an 18th-century farm! Learn how simple chores like writing a letter, working in the barn, or caring for a sick person utilize chemistry and physics. As we explore a historic tavern, we’ll become household scientists: making medicine by grinding herbs from the garden, using simple tools, and observing chemical reactions in making ink and butter!
Irish Tavern Night
Saturday, March 9, 5:00 – 7:00 PM, at Buckman Tavern
$20 members, $25 nonmembers.
St. Patrick’s Day has come early with a special Irish-themed Tavern Night! We’re recreating the 18th century tavern experience: drop in for music and games, snacks, whiskey tasting with GrandTen Distillery, and beer served from our historic bar in the Buckmans’ original taproom. Mingle with costumed reenactors and the Merry Minstrels music group as they bring the Revolutionary tavern to life. Ticket price includes one bar drink and whiskey tasting. Cash bar available.
