Lexington Symphony’s Inaugural Lunar New Year Concert Features Mongolian Morin Khuur Soloist Dr. Erdenbuhe in a Morin Khuur Concerto

The concert program also includes Bright Sheng’s China Dreams II: Fanfare; Tabuh-Tabuhan, a gamelan-inspired toccata for two pianos and orchestra by Colin McPhee; and Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka.
Mongolian morin khuur soloist Dr. Erdenbuhe is a leading advocate, educator, composer, researcher, and performer of the morin khuur (Mongolian horsehead fiddle) and choor. He serves as Associate Professor and Master’s Supervisor in the Department of Music at Inner Mongolia University of the Arts and holds leadership roles as Executive Director of the Chinese Morin Khuur Association and Vice President of the Inner Mongolia Tsuur Association. He is also the Founder and Director of the Khankhuur and Ayin Primitive Music Ensembles and the Inner Mongolia Duulte Morin Khuur Art Training Center.
Born on the Xilinguole grasslands of Inner Mongolia, Dr. Erdenbuhe grew up immersed in traditional music. He crafted his first morin khuur at age nine and began formal study at fourteen, later earning both a Master’s and Doctorate in music. As a composer, he is known for blending traditional Mongolian musical forms with international influences; his work Praise of the Mongolian Horse premiered at the Inner Mongolia CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2025.
An internationally recognized performer, Dr. Erdenbuhe has received numerous awards, including gold medals at national and international competitions, and has appeared at festivals and concert halls worldwide. He also conducts educational programs on traditional Mongolian music and culture and will present upcoming sessions for Lexington High School Performing Arts students on February 11, 2026, and for Lexington Public Schools’ fourth graders on February 12, 2026, at the Lexington High School.

Upcoming programs include Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, performed by British violinist Callum Smart; Bells by Still; Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra; and Maestro McPhee’s full-length arrangement of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In conjunction with The Phoenix Project: Side-by-Side Music Performance for Amateur Adult Musicians, Lexington Symphony will showcase a jazz ensemble concert featuring participants of the four-day adult music summer camp on July 22, 2026, followed by a full orchestra concert on July 23, 2026. Support for this project in the summer of 2025 was provided in part by a generous grant from the Community Endowment of Lexington (CEL), a fund of the Community Foundation for MetroWest, and by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Grants for Arts Projects (GAP).
The Community Endowment of Lexington (CEL) enhances the quality of life for Lexington citizens. CEL, a fund of the Community Foundation for MetroWest, awards grants to nonprofits and town agencies working in the areas of health and human services, arts and culture, the environment, and community building.
