I n today’s fast-paced and often overwhelming world, young people are facing increasing mental health challenges. Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress are becoming more common, and many youth struggle in silence. As a community, we all have a role to play in recognizing when a young person needs help and knowing how to respond.
That’s where Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training comes in.
What is Youth Mental Health First Aid?
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training program designed to teach adults how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in young people ages 12–18.
Much like CPR prepares you to respond to a physical emergency, YMHFA equips you with the tools to support a young person experiencing a mental health crisis or developing concern.
Participants learn how to:
- Recognize early warning signs of mental health challenges
- Offer initial support in a calm and nonjudgmental way
- Connect youth to appropriate professional help and resources
- Respond to crises such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, or substance use
Why This Training Matters
Early intervention can make a life-changing difference. When trusted adults, parents, educators, coaches, neighbors are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, they can help prevent problems from escalating and support young people in getting the care they need.
By participating in this training, you’re not just learning, you’re becoming part of a stronger, more compassionate safety net for youth in our community.
